Chicken Curry Recipe| Tasty and Spicy Chicken Curry

It is believed that chicken curry was originated in the Indian subcontinent around 7000 to 8000 years ago. Everybody has a different taste for chicken. Some people love dry chicken, some people love chicken with thick gravy or some may love mouth-watering Chicken in Curry.

Hey!! If you are one of them who love to eat chicken with curry then you are most welcome to this article, here I am going to share a tangy chicken curry recipe that will blow your mind. Let’s get started.

Prepration time 15 min

Cooking time 30 min


For marination:-

  • Chicken drumsticks or Chicken pieces- 500 gm
  • Cooking oil- 3-4 tbsp
  • Ginger garlic paste- 1 tbsp
  • Kashmiri chili powder- 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
  • Black pepper powder- 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala (whole spices powder)- 1 tsp
  • Cumin powder- 1 tsp
  • Curd( plain yogurt)- 4 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Lemon juice- 1 tsp or juice of a half lemon
  • Cooking oil/ olive oil- 2 tsp
  • Charcoal- 1 piece (optional)

Tips– If you like tandoori or smoky flavor in your curry use charcoal at the time of marination, otherwise skip this step and enjoy this delicious recipe.

For Chicken Curry:-

  • Cooking oil- 2-3 tbsp
  • Onion- 2 medium size (diced)
  • Tomato- 2 medium size (puree)
  • Ginger garlic paste- 2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Cumin powder-1 tsp
  • Coriander powder- 2 tsp
  • Kasuri methi or dried fenugreek leaves- 1tbsp
  • Kashmiri red chili- 1 tsp

Lets start Chicken Curry recipe:-

Step 1:-

Take 500 gm of chicken drumsticks (leg pieces) or you can use chicken curry cut pieces. Wash chicken two to three times and pat dry the chicken.


Step 2:-

This step is for marination. Add salt, coriander powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder, Kashmiri red chili powder, ginger-garlic paste, lemon juice, oil, curd, and mix it well.


Step 3 (Optional):-

If you like tandoori or smoky flavor in chicken curry then only follow this step. I really like that smoky or charcoal flavor in chicken pieces. For this step burn charcoal on a gas flame. Place burnt charcoal on a foil paper and put it in the bowel and add 2 to 4 drops of oil or ghee on burnt charcoal, it will release smokes. Immediately cover it and leave it for 20-30 minutes.


Step 4:-(Optional)

Heat a pan on a high heat add cooking oil in pan and grill the chicken till it is done or cooked completely on medium to high flame.

Step 5:-

Heat 2 to 3 tbsp oil in a pan or kadhai and stir fry 2 medium size diced onions until they turned out golden brown in color. Add 2 tsp ginger garlic paste into it and cook it well for 1 minute. Add puree of 3 medium size tomatoes Add salt, Kashmiri red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder. Cook all together until the spice mix releases oil from it.

Step 6:-

Add 1 to 2 cups of water into it and mix it well or adjust the thickness of gravy according to your taste. Cook it on low flame for 3 to 5 minutes. Gravy is ready. Add Kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves) and garam masala powder into it and mix it well and add chicken drumsticks into it. Cook it another 8 to 10 minutes or until the chicken gets a soft texture.

I have made this Chicken Curry less thick which tastes good with rice. If you want to have this chicken curry with bread (chapati, naan, paratha) make it thicker.
